Technical Information

UC San Diego's Mandeville Auditorium is San Diego's leading mid-size  performance venue. This 764 seat space is suitable for a full range of performing arts including dance, concerts, and theater, as well as special events such as conferences and lectures. The auditorium has hosted productions that include Wynton Marsalis, John Lithgow, David Sedaris, the Kronos Quartet, Ravi Shankar, and Spike & Mike's Festival of Animation. Local groups that take advantage of the venue include La Jolla Symphony & Chorus and UC San Diego's Wind Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, and Gospel Choir.

Overview

Mandeville Auditorium is conveniently situated near Interstate 5, only minutes from most San Diego locations. With its 42-foot-wide by 30-foot-deep stage, comfortable seating, flexible lighting grid, and professional audio system, the auditorium is ideal for your event. Front rows can be reconfigured to accommodate tables or an alternative seating plan. Easy load-in is assured thanks to wide side doors and a spacious loading dock with adjacent freight elevator. Professional production staff are available to ensure a smooth experience.

Designed by prominent Southern California architect A. Quincy Jones and completed in 1975, Mandeville Auditorium stands out among UC San Diego's early modernist and "brutalist" buildings. Creeping vines climb its concrete walls and the building is shaded by mature eucalyptus trees.

Internet Access

The UC San Diego campus, including the Mandeville Auditorium, has a "UCSD-GUEST" WIFI network. Anyone can join this by connecting and then confirming the network usage agreement via a web browser (similar to how Starbucks works). This network is firewalled but provides access for all web-based functions, as well as SSH. The UC San Diego help page on this can be found here:

https://blink.ucsd.edu/technology/network/connections/wireless/guest.html

The "UCSD-GUEST" WIFI network can be overwhelmed when too many users access it at once. For a more robust connection, we can facilitate wired ethernet access in specific locations within the auditorium. Wired ethernet will work for computers, dedicated video streaming systems, and is a good solution for credit card systems that require security compliance. UC San Diego policy prevents the connection of NAT routers (including WIFI access points).

Per UC San Diego policy, all devices utilizing the wired network must be registered with their hardware address (aka "MAC address"). Registration can take up to two weeks and we recommend taking care of this well in advance of the event.

If neither UCSD-GUEST nor wired ethernet will suffice, we recommend pursuing the use of a WIFI hotspot that uses a cellular network.

Communication Systems

Communication is provided by ClearCom Headsets that can be plugged into various ports throughout the auditorium. The basement Dressing Rooms and Green Room have individual audio monitors that carry a feed from the stage.

Projection

Video Projection can be controlled from the Booth, Stage Right, or the House (center of audience rows KK & LL). It is recommended that all playback content be pre-loaded onto a renter's laptop as streaming over the UCSD-GUEST WIFI can be unreliable.

All use of "atmospherics" (fog, haze, and dry ice) must receive prior sign-off and approval by the campus fire marshal at least 30 days prior to event start. All events using atmospherics, must provide the University with an operational Fire Plan, including information on "Fire Watch" teams.

The Loading Dock is located one floor below the stage level. Access to the stage level is via a Freight Elevator which must be operated by Mandeville staff only. Loading is also possible through the side doors of the theater on the stage level.
